Devorah Sperber, After the Last Supper (detail)

“The Eye of the Artist: The Work of Devorah Sperber”
Through May 6, 2007

Optical tour de forces, Sperber's installations confront the way we think we see with the reality of how the brain processes visual information. Art historical icons dissolve into strange, unknown territory as she deconstructs their familiar imagery. Here, she presents two recent full-scale re-creations of Leonardo's Last Supper and Mona Lisa. Multicolored spools of thread form pixelated, three-dimensional inversions of the paintings, which appear only as colorful abstractions to the naked eye. But when viewed with special optical devices, chaos resolves into order, with the parts coelescing once again into recognizable wholes.
